GP practices continue to experience significant demand, and every available appointment plays an important role in ensuring patients receive timely care.
Using Castlegate and Derwent Surgery as a recent case study, the practice has highlighted the ongoing issue of missed appointments - commonly referred to as “Did Not Attends” (DNAs). While this example relates to one surgery, missed appointments are a challenge faced by practices across the region.
Each appointment that is not attended without prior cancellation represents a lost opportunity for another patient who may be waiting to be seen. In the current climate, where general practice teams are working under sustained pressure, even small changes can make a meaningful difference.
Practices understand that there are sometimes unavoidable circumstances which prevent patients from attending. However, where possible, notifying the surgery in advance allows staff to reallocate that appointment slot to someone else in need of care.
While a single missed appointment may seem minor, collectively they add up and contribute to increased pressure across primary care services. A simple phone call or cancellation through the appropriate system can help practices make the best use of their limited capacity.
Patients are encouraged to contact their surgery as soon as possible if they are unable to attend a booked appointment. Small actions can have a significant impact - for the practice, and for the wider community.
