Winter Weather and Health: Staying Safe and Well in Cumbria

As winter continues to bring icy roads, snow, and freezing temperatures, it’s important to plan ahead and stay safe, both for yourself and your community.

Impact on Health and Care Services

Cold and snowy weather can affect access to GP practices, pharmacies, and other health and care services. Some staff may be unable to get to work safely, and services may operate on reduced capacity. Your local GP practice or pharmacy will keep patients updated if there are any changes, but please be patient, staff are doing their best under difficult conditions.

Winter Health Tips from the NHS:

  • Check on vulnerable neighbours and friends – the elderly, those with long-term conditions, or anyone living alone may need extra support.

  • Keep your medicine cabinet stocked – pain relief, cold remedies, and any prescription medication you rely on.

  • Dress warmly and layer up – frostbite and hypothermia are real risks.

  • Keep active safely – gentle indoor exercise can help circulation and mood.

  • Eat well and stay hydrated – warm drinks and balanced meals can help your body cope with the cold.

  • Plan travel carefully – icy roads, closed paths, or reduced public transport can delay your journey.

  • Use NHS services wisely – self-care, pharmacy advice, GP teams, and NHS 111 are there for non-urgent issues.
A&E and 999 are for emergencies only.

A Gentle Reminder

Winter can be tough, especially when combined with the pressures of daily life. Please be kind to staff, neighbours, and fellow community members, a little patience and compassion goes a long way.
