As the NHS prepares for its busiest winter period, BBC Radio Cumbria spent 25 November 2025 at Carlisle Healthcare, exploring the challenges staff face in delivering care across the city.
The surgery, which looks after more than 40,000 patients across three sites, manages hundreds of calls and online appointment requests daily. Clinical Director Dr Robert Westgate highlighted that demand often outstrips capacity, with triage systems helping staff prioritise care for patients, whether online, over the phone, or in person.
Throughout the live broadcasts, guests included:
-
Advanced Clinical Practitioner: Sarah Sewell
-
Clinical Pharmacist Prescriber: Scott Merrin
-
Social Prescriber: Rachel Murdie
The visit also featured NJ’s Café, located on the surgery site, which has become a valued community hub. Owners Jo and Nadia Beattie spoke about the support they receive from patients and staff alike and how much they valued being part of their experience.
Patients also shared their experiences, including Neil from Carlisle, who praised the surgery for its efficient, personalised care.
Dr Westgate kept listeners updated throughout the morning on the number of patients contacting the surgery and explained how the team safely manages demand. He also offered advice to listeners on how to stay well over the winter months.
