Community Cancer Awareness Workers raise awareness of the causes of cancer, its signs and symptoms as well as encouraging people to take up invitations to cancer screening programmes.
They aim to work with communities where cancer is either more prevalent or outcomes from cancer are poorer.
Our initial Project (Primary Care Services North Cumbria) featured Julie Crellin in this role from October 2024 to May 2026 leading the work on cancer awareness in the local community, primarily in West Cumbria. This page highlights some of that engagement work and explains the importance of it.
This cancer awareness work aimed to inform communities and workplaces across North Cumbria NHS area about the importance of early diagnosis. Diagnosing cancer before it has the chance to spread too far means that treatment is more likely to be successful.
Addressing Health Inequalities
By focusing efforts on areas where cancer diagnosis rates are lower or outcomes are poorer, this ensures that all communities have access to vital information and resources.
This awareness work plays a vital role in reducing late-stage cancer diagnoses and improving survival rates by ensuring more people recognise symptoms early and seek medical advice promptly.
