We recently visited Distington Community Centre in West Cumbria to see first-hand how local initiatives are helping people improve their health, wellbeing and fitness.

As part of a local Integrated Care Community (ICC) and Primary Care Network (PCN) approach, Fit 4 Life Cumbria is delivering “exercise on prescription” sessions designed to support patients in a safe, welcoming environment. The classes are tailored to be accessible for everyone, allowing participants to work at their own pace.

They are particularly beneficial for people living with long-term conditions, managing chronic pain, or experiencing mobility challenges. For many, these sessions provide an important first step into physical activity, alongside the added benefits of social connection and ongoing support.

In the video, Susan Hurrell from Copeland Haven Primary Care Network and Harry Leigh from Fit 4 Life Cumbria share their insights into how the sessions are run and the positive difference they are making to people’s lives.

The sessions highlight the value of community-based support in helping people stay active and well, closer to home.

A big thank you to everyone who took part and allowed us to capture the session. It was great to see the enjoyment and benefits these classes are bringing to participants.
