World Pharmacists Day is an opportunity to recognise the knowledge, expertise and contribution of pharmacists working across Cumbria and the wider health and care system. This year it took place on 25 September.
You may not realise just how much pharmacists do. They are highly trained clinicians with a wide range of skills and expertise, supporting patients with medicines and playing an important role across healthcare.
Their work can include helping people get the most from their medicines, answering questions, identifying potential problems, supporting people with long-term conditions, prescribing and carrying out medication reviews, as well as working alongside other healthcare professionals to provide joined-up care.
And pharmacists aren't just found behind the counter of your local pharmacy.
Pharmacists work in community pharmacies, GP practices and primary care, hospitals, community services and many other parts of the NHS and wider health and care system.
Within primary care here in Cumbria, pharmacists are increasingly part of the wider practice team, bringing their specialist knowledge of medicines to support patients and colleagues alongside GPs, nurses, healthcare assistants and other healthcare professionals.
Their role continues to be an important part of modern healthcare across Cumbria, helping patients make the most of their medicines and supporting the wider healthcare teams providing care in local communities.
So, this World Pharmacists Day, we're saying a big thank you to all the pharmacists and their wider medications teams working across Cumbria and beyond for the knowledge, expertise and support they bring to patients and colleagues every day.
